Does anyone have a link to a ballistics chart for 308 M80 (7.62 nato) for 16" barrel? my experience w .308 has been in 16" and 18" barrels. The main issue is velocity … Decided to go with the 16" barrel because, all of the data I could find indicated that the 16" barrel length was just about the point that the "knee" on the curve of muzzle velocity vs. barrel length occurred. Federal Gold Medal Match load number GM308M is 2650 fps from a 24" barrel. For shorter barrels reduce velocity below as follows(ca): 20" -3.9%/-130Fps// 16" -9.0%/-300Fps. As far as bullet weight goes each rifle is an individual and since 300yds is your max range boat tail bullets may be a moot point. I cut my Marlin 1894C and 1894, 357 and 44 Mag, to 16" each. I have shot both short barreled 308's and short barreled 223's and the 223's are much more violent. Quickload also calculates a 3400fps load in 24 inch barrel to 3100fps in a 16 inch barrel. I own a Ruger Compact in 308 and it too has a 16.5 inch barrel. I would think the flash of the 16" would be far greater than the 21" inch since more powder burns while the bullet is still in the barrel. I went through the decision-making process a while back before ordering the Larue 7.62 Predatar. is that really worth an extra 3-5% in muzzle energy? https://www.patreon.com/Bigbore Testing barrel length vs velocity with two ammo manufacturers. I have 3 carbines with 16" barrels. in .308, once you go past 20" there is very little (if any) increase in velocity. The point of what I posted was to show reality about the differences in velocity.
